Pétanque America Open 2018 on Amelia Island, FLCome out to Amelia Island this November for the tenth annual Pétanque America Open – still the largest Pétanque event in the Americas! November 9th through the 11th, 2018 in Fernandina Beach.

The annual Pétanque America Open (updated to Pétanque Amelia Island Open in 2017) has been going strong here since its inception in 2009. In fact, it grows with each passing year.

If you’re not familiar with Pétanque, don’t feel out of step. It’s not exactly a rival to football, baseball, or hockey as team sport popularity goes. That being said, its not exactly unheard of, either.

What is Pétanque?

Pétanque, pronounced “pay-tonk,” is the French word for “bowling,” which tells you a bit about the game. The game originated in Provence, France during the early 1900’s.

Pétanque is similar to both horseshoes and the Italian bowling game of bocce. Teams or players compete by tossing hollow metal balls, known as boules, as close as they can to a small target ball, called the jack.

This classic French game is a great pastime for almost everyone because it is so easy to learn and play. People of all ages and skill levels can play. The game is simple, relaxing, and fun. An excellent island pastime and a perfect way to make new friends!
